Have you noticed something strange? Two AI tools, both powerful — one doubles your productivity, the other leaves you more exhausted than when you started. It's not about how smart you are. It's about how the tool is designed.

Ethan Mollick recently highlighted a revealing study: researchers had finance professionals complete a complex asset valuation task using GPT-4o, measuring their cognitive load throughout. AI did boost efficiency — but it also seemed to drain attention. Giant walls of text, unsolicited topic tangents, conversations that spiraled into chaos. The problem wasn't the AI's capability. It was the chatbot interface itself.

In other words, the chatbox is charging a cognitive tax.

The Limits of the Universal Interface

For the past few years, we've normalized a single pattern: open an AI website, type a question, wait for an answer. This works great for quick questions — look up a term, translate a phrase, ask a simple fact. But the moment a task gets complex, this model breaks down.

Mollick describes a typical scenario: you ask AI a specific question, and it responds with five paragraphs — the answer buried somewhere in paragraph three, while the AI helpfully introduces three topics you never asked about. For humans, this kind of information overload triggers anxiety and decision fatigue. Worse, once a conversation turns messy, it rarely recovers. Because the AI is designed to be helpful — it mirrors back whatever disorganized structure the user provides, while compounding it with even more content.

This isn't an AI problem. It's an interface problem.

Specialized Tools Are Rising

Mollick's recent research outlines a new trend in AI tools, and the most relevant one for educators is the emergence of specialized AI interfaces.

Google is arguably leading this charge. Their NotebookLM lets users upload multiple documents and then research and write around those specific materials — not open-ended chat, but focused knowledge work on your own sources. Stitch generates app interfaces from natural language descriptions, pointing toward a future where non-technical professionals can build their own tools without writing code.

By contrast, the universal chatbot often behaves like a generalist who knows a little about everything but masters nothing. It can answer questions, but it doesn't know your project, your workflow, or what format your output needs to be in.

What This Means for Education

For educators, this trend points to a critical question: are our children also paying the cognitive tax when using AI?

When a high school student writes a research paper using a chatbox, they constantly switch between "describing what they want" and "processing what they get." They must judge what the AI offered, what part is useful, and what to discard. This cognitive overhead can sometimes be heavier than just doing the work without AI.

The logic of specialized AI interfaces is the opposite: tools designed for the task, not tasks forced to fit a tool. Writing assistants focused on writing. Code editors built for programming. Research tools tailored to literature review. Each one knows what you're doing and formats its output to match your workflow.

For kids, learning to choose the right AI tool is itself a skill that needs nurturing. This isn't fundamentally different from choosing the right notebook or the right reference book — it's about using the most efficient tool for the job at hand.

Three Practical Steps

First, help kids distinguish "quick questions" from "complex tasks." Looking up a concept or translating a phrase? A general chatbox is fine. Writing a research report, analyzing a dataset, or planning a project? These need more specialized tools and clearer workflows.

Second, pay attention to education-specific AI tools. Khan Academy, NotebookLM, and similar platforms are worth recommending not just because they're well-made, but because they're designed for learning. When children use them, they don't waste energy fighting the interface's limitations.

Third, make "choosing tools" part of digital literacy. One of the most important future skills isn't "knowing how to use AI" — it's "knowing which AI to use when." This judgment grows through real practice in authentic contexts.

AI tools are forking. That's not a bad thing — it means tools are becoming more specialized. And education's job is to help kids navigate an increasingly complex tool ecosystem and find the one that fits them best.
