When AI Builds AI: What Education Must Do Next

Updated

Have you ever imagined AI creating smarter AI?

This isn't science fiction. In February 2026, OpenAI announced that its latest Codex model was instrumental in creating itself. At Davos, Anthropic's CEO revealed that their engineers barely write code anymore—AI is building AI for them.

This concept is called Recursive Self-Improvement (RSI). Simply put: AI improves AI, creating a self-accelerating loop.

What Does This Mean for Education?

First, the goal of learning to code is being redefined. For the past decade, teaching kids to code has been the mantra of every ed-tech company. But if AI can write in seconds what takes human programmers days, what's the value of coding education?

The answer isn't in writing code, but in defining problems. When AI can automatically generate, test, and deploy software, human value shifts from how to implement to what to implement. It's like when cars replaced horses—transportation remained, but the skill shifted from controlling horses to planning routes.

Second, education's time scale is being compressed. Ethan Mollick demonstrates this with his Otter Test: in 2022, AI couldn't draw an otter on a plane using WiFi. By 2025, it generated perfect images. Now, it creates documentary videos about the test itself. Technology advances faster than any educational curriculum can update.

Third, knowledge itself is losing stability. When AI can generate real-time, accurate information, memorization loses value while judging information quality gains importance. A standard answer a child memorizes today might be overturned by AI tomorrow.

A Real-World Case

A company called StrongDM has built a Software Factory: humans write product requirements, AI handles all coding, testing, and deployment. They have two radical rules: code must be written by AI, and code must be reviewed by AI.

What does this mean? A fresh computer science graduate who only knows how to code might find their core competency replaced on day one.

But for those who understand user needs and can translate fuzzy problems into clear requirements, this isn't a threat—it's a tool upgrade. They can tell AI, I need an app to track learning progress, and get a prototype within hours.

How Should Education Respond?

First, shift from learning to use tools to learning to collaborate with tools. Don't just teach kids how to use ChatGPT for homework—teach them how to judge if ChatGPT's answers are reliable. Tools change; judgment doesn't.

Second, cultivating questioning is more important than cultivating answering. In an era where AI can answer anything, those who ask the right questions are scarce. A good question unlocks AI's full potential; a vague question yields word salad.

Third, let children participate in defining, not just executing. When AI can execute most tasks, human uniqueness lies in setting goals, establishing standards, and making judgments. These abilities need cultivation from childhood, not just job training.

Conclusion

AI is learning to build itself. This isn't alarmism—it's happening now.

Education doesn't need to compete with AI. It needs to help children become irreplaceable: people who ask good questions, navigate complex situations, and find direction amidst change.

Technology's endpoint isn't replacing humans—it's enabling humans to do more valuable work. The question is: Is our education ready?
